Redefine God - Open Source Religion and Religion 2.0

The Open Source Religion & Spirituality Project and Religion 2.0

It's a very interesting topic - was the Earth God's creation, or did it just happen out of nothingness? If it happened out of nothingness, what is the point of life here on Earth? If there is no God, what is our purpose? If we have no purpose, then why were so many things created for a purpose (one example - plants create oxygen). If there are aliens in our universe, what is their purpose?

Many have touched on the idea of creationism with evolution. I don't understand this. If we evolved from monkeys, why did evolution all of a sudden stop? Has anyone seen this happen since? Many arguments against God are arguments that we can't see Him, so how do we know there is a God? But has anyone seen a monkey evolve into a man? How do we know that evolution happened if no one has seen it? These questions rely on our senses. And this is where the leap of faith either happens or doesn't happen. Those who rely on their senses for truth will not take the leap of faith. "Scientific inquiry deals only with what can be observed and measured." (Stewart, p. 286)

Naturalism is another argument for intelligent design. Naturalism is the "view that nature is "the whole show."" (Stewart, p. 286). But naturalism does not explain everything human. We are created and nature is created. Nature does not involve thoughts or feelings like humans do. Our DNA make up cannot be explained by naturalism.

I found this verse and just have to share it. It seemed to hit home with me today.

'For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.' Ephesians 2:8-10

gneognostic,

Imagine that Man is monitoring truly ALL activities and changes throughout life on Earth. With such information, he would be tempted to deflect anything seen as a potential threat. But that means that he is determining good from bad and guiding life toward a chosen path. At that point (some years ago), he is determining the future, not waiting for it to happen by accident. Thus "evolution" (a process of incidentals) is not happening any longer, because Man steps in to correct any accidental variation from his plan.

doug, I'm glad you've found a story that gives you what you need in life - to be removed from the animal kingdom and its associations, to be a rebel against perceived scientific orthodoxy, to be the "good son" of some sky-father. To live in a world unclouded by uncertainties. Good on you, chaver.

It's not my story, it doesn't match the data as I see it, and to me, turning away from the observable data is to put the cart before the horse. but I don't dispute your right to your cosmogony, and I can see its appeal.

@james, ahh, I see. I think.

Beavers, in their quest to guide life toward a chosen path, have wrecked considerable environmental havoc with their dam building. Meteors have struck the earth, for fun I suppose, and caused massive destruction. To me, the human impact on the world is just as "incidental". the difference is, we have the choice to be sustainable and limit our environmental impact, or to just go balls out and be the next major world extinction event. The biggest threat to continued human existence isn't plagues or natural disasters, it's human irresponsibility.

Laili,

Thanks! It's a question that has yet to be answered and one I try to use when people ask me if I've "seen" God in order to believe in Him. I have yet to find an answer why it did stop. We adapt every day - that is a fact. But, to stop evolving entirely makes no sense to me.

Doug,

I really appreciate all of your teachings on here. They make the most sense to me. Some might say that's because I'm "blinded" by my faith am seeking the answer that I want to believe. I would say it's because it makes perfect sense to me. I think some of the examples presented here are not evolution, but adaptation. The Chameleon adapts to its surroundings by changing colors. This doesn't mean the chameleon has evolved. I have a hard time with science's attempt to prove to us that we evolved from apes is flawed. Take for instance carbon dating. How do we REALLY know that they are able to really date people by their carbon base? Isn't that taking the "leap of faith" in science and believing it because that's what they tell us?

Look at dinosaurs. Scientists claim to know how the environment and "personalities" of the predators and herbivores so long ago. But, how can you tell me that a T-Rex can only see movement from merely examining their bones? How is that scientifically possible. They used to say dogs have no memory of anything. Now they're re-thinking that theory. They can't even tell us the behavior of animals that are alive.

Anyway, Doug, I appreciate your input. I'm with you 100%.

Lori you crack me up. I love your comment, has anyone seen a monkey evolve into a man? It reminds me of those t-shirts that show the "evolution of man" going from a monkey to a man and then to a man sitting at a computer, haha.
I have to agree with you. The theory of the Big Bang, of the whole universe exploding out of nothing, always seemed a little silly to me. It makes more sense to me to say that God made the Big Bang happen, or something to that nature. In terms of evolution, I never understand people who believe in the whole monkey into a man thing, it just seems so outlandish and ridiculous. Science can say what they like about how similar monkeys and humans are, but to me, the whole idea is just kinda stupid.

Signifying Monkey - seek and you shall find....

Don't talk to the MONKEY ... talk to the DONKEY (based on my "ASK YOUR ASS" theory)

"Seat Switching" (another "Hole Folding")

Make sure when you switch seats on the Titanic, it's on the LIFEBOAT.

Jeff, so does the Big Bang theory..... and that's what I'm tweaking...... glad you caught that.... that's the whole aspect of thought .... and being able to hop from one place to another and see if there is any understanding and grasp of the level of communication and what's occurring here.

Thank you, Lori. Good point on T-Rex. Just like what is said about its diet because of it's teeth. There are many animals with sharp teeth that are vegetarians. Sharp teeth do not necessarily make an animal a predator. It only means they have sharp teeth. A panda bear uses its sharp teeth on bamboo.

And thank you, gneognostic. And it's not a matter of matching the data, but rather one's interpretation of the data, which is based on one's worldview. The data itself says nothing.

Switching seats to a lifeboat is not merely enough...you must be certain it is seaworthy and that it can be unsecured from the Titanic when the Titanic goes down. But maybe that goes without saying...
