the constitution protects religious identity in that it states congress can't make laws prohibiting religious expression. It doesn't say that nobody is allowed to disagree with religious belief. Saying, for example, that scientology is hilarious hog…

well, the most obvious reason is that jewishness is an ethnic identity more than a religious one. you can be a secular jew (and a large percentage of jews identify this way), but not a secular christian. If I say "christian beliefs are outdated and…

Are you sure about that Jeff? taken literally... this means you do not believe in God's word that is complied in the "Big Book" ?... God's word is any many places...sometimes it's not a word... it's a symbol... and better yet...a signal. db

@james, ahh, I see. I think. Beavers, in their quest to guide life toward a chosen path, have wrecked considerable environmental havoc with their dam building. Meteors have struck the earth, for fun I suppose, and caused massive destruction. To me,…

Jesus on the gender dichotomy

Jesus saw some babies nursing. He said to his disciples, "These nursing babies are like those who enter the (Father's) kingdom."

They said to him, "Then shall we enter the (Father's) kingdom as babies?"

Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in plac… Continue

Those who struggle with god

I love religious paths, I think they're awesome and fascinating and variously fulfilling. generally, I feel like they don't quite fit with my outlook on things, especially because I feel like I need freedom to believe and not believe at my whim and leisure.

The path that I've felt most personally inclined to is judaism. the depth and richness of the cultural traditions, the beauty of the liturgy, the freedom and trepidation with which jews approach the divine. But judaism is a faith that is rea… Continue

I admire

-doone for his dogged devotion to the objective scientific worldview, expressed in countless diagrams and articles.
-Jeff H for his open mindedness and willingness to consider alternate frames of reference.
- doug for his passion and unshakable faith, the sheer totality of his surrender to the absurd.

and having said all that, I'm dropping out of the debates on evolution. I just find them infuriating and futile. RG is to me about collectively building frameworks for the relation to the divine t… Continue

The divine luthier

Imagine an instrument so sensitive and resonant that every centimeter of it produced some note when bowed, plucked or struck - a cello crossed with a piano with a bit of harp thrown in. It makes the most rich subtle music, capable of immense diversity of tone, timbre and volume. Its maker, the eminent luthier who built, stringed and tuned the instrument, must be herself a devoted lover of music and beauty, and must regard her creation with an infinite tenderness and satisfaction.

The human body… Continue

I have moved on from Evolution - I am now trying to prove that Jesus was a Buddhist to annoy Jeff H. It seemed unlikely at the start but I have uncovered some interesting tidbits of information. It is at least possible that Buddhist monks influenced Jewish thought in the years after 250 BC.

I was named MUwAM by "Doug" so I am keeping it as a badge of honor or dishonor - depending on your point of view.

Thanks of the comment. I appreciate it. I try to talk to everyone without anger and honestly to see their opinion and how I can learn from it.

oh, well, thanks! I'd been thinking the bio was tooo long and considered shortening it to just the web page link.

One of the secrets to my success? Quit watching t.v. about 7th grade. Too boring. Flat roles for women. Would rather live life than watch someone else do it. Also, willing to be (financially) poor for many, many years - even to point of not having a home at times. Part time work only. No ironing. And so on. All of it equals more time for what's more important!

Hey GN,

One of the earliest influences on my beliefs was the character of Spock from Star Trek. In the rather wonderful book Spock's World written in the early 80's by Diane Duane we learn more about the history of Vulcan and about the person who helped guide the planet onto a path of logical thought and self control Surak. Chthia is a Vulcan word that commonly gets translated as "logic" but is more precisely translated as "reality truth". Basically Ms. Duane envisioned Vulcan's system of self mastery as kind of a blend of Buddhism, Taoism, and Stoicism. And it's always worked fairly well for me, especially since as much as I find admirable in each of those systems there are also many things that I have problems with.

You asked: "One question in my mind is, does god also exist apart from, or transcendent from, the natural universe?"
The following is no doubt a repeat of what I have said elsewhere. It is strictly my opinion and offered without any intention of being doctrinaire:
GOD is that which is without borders, dimensions, whatever. As you imply below: "There is nothing that ISN'T god."
Check out John 4: 7-30--the story of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman--where Jesus defines God as "Spirit". The Greek for Spirit is 'pneuma'--which literally means air, wind, breath. In Jesus day air was a thing of great mystery, not unlike what we have in mind, today, when we think about the vacuum of infinite space into which the universe is expanding.
In John 3--the story of Nicodemus--Jesus equates 'pneuma' with coming to conscious awareness of self--being born again.

- I would propose this as a matter of perspective. In one sense I am God, and I am one with the universe. In this mood, I look at the outside world as being a reflection of my inner landscape, and it serves as a mirror through which I can practice self-reflection. But sometimes it is more gratifying to focus on the alien aspects of experience. Things that through (our separation) lack of understanding cause shock or fear or anger. Or perhaps romantic love, there's a fine line there sometimes. Because there is a kind of love that cannot be experienced for ones self but only for a Beloved Other. And the most romantic is the evolution of the experience of the alien from hate/fear into love.
