John, I don't agree. Corot's pic'n'mix of dutch and Italian influences never really worked for him in his efforts to establish a truly original style, unlike contemporaries Blake, Turner, etc.

Nice observation. Can you define "spiritual" - what you mean by that?
December 31, 2009
I find Corot more spiritual than Blake. The difference is the difference between reality and caricature. Take Van Gogh's "Potato Eaters" for example, this has a spiritual reality but is not a caricature.

Profile Information

At least 3 subjects I am interested in.
Born in Czech immigrant community.
Early childhood in farm house without indoor plumbing, with assertive grandmother w/ college education. My grandparents were Hussites and that legacy of independence, mistrust of authority, importance of education, and direct experience of God continues as a strong influence on me.
Mother who initiated the daily, around the breakfast table, discussions about our dreams. Each child privately kept a dream journal. Mom prescient, precognitive, telepathic, loved classical music and opera. Dad deaf since age 3, w/ thick Czech accent, graphic artist, lover of jazz.

After we moved to a city, began studying dance, ballet and jazz mostly.

BFA Magna cum Laude in drawing and painting w/ studies of modern dance. Started collaborating with composers and choreographers, began exhibiting nationally at age 20. Worked in the theatre. Travelled to Dominican Republic and New York City. Began creating multi-media performance art. Several commissioned by midwestern universities.

Started teaching art, dance, and performance art in the remote Native villages in the Alaskan bush - did so intermittently for ten years and 30+ trips north. This is where my work became my own, in the blessed isolation. Most remarkable hike: 70 degrees below zero, walking north on the frozen arctic sea. Rec'd grant from Ucross Foundation, an artist colony in Wyoming.

Moved to Seattle. Worked in several theatres and with a couple films. Runway model for I. Magnin's, Nordstroms, and others. Trip to England, Denmark, Russia, Moscow into Siberia on the train, then Talin, Estonia. 2nd trip to Russia, taught at the Pskov School of Folks Arts & Culture, travelled to St. Petersberg, Kirelia, Island of Kizje. More exhibits including Redefining Visionary Art in New York City, curated by Suzi Gablik et al. Decided to earn an MFA, after which I taught college art and art history for a couple years. Work purchased for collections of several major hospitals.

My son is born. Travels to France, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Holland, Austria. Later life upheavals led to attending Saybrook Graduate School, earning an MA in psychology. Met Ruth Richards, M.D., Ph.D., and Stanley Krippner, Ph.D.

In doctoral studies in psychology of spirituality and consciousness. Almost done w/ certificate in psychology of creativity. Was one of the last students of anthropologist Ruth Inge Heinze and experienced first drum visions under her guidance. Continuing to work with Richards and Krippner.

Current research interests are the contemporary artist as shaman - see discussion Art, Spirituality, and Consciousness, where draft of essay is posted.

Precognitive dreams, visions, prescient, see aura's and spirits of the departed, have healed with my hands and through my artwork. For me, labore est orare, to work is to pray. Particularly interested in how shamanic artists heal individuals and societies.

Now, over 60 juried exhibits, over 20 solo shows. Work in collection of Glasmuseet in Ebeltoft, Denmark. Recording numerous ideas for paintings. Home schooling my son who is now 10. Expanding exponentially and taller than the tallest Douglas fir. Golden and still. Live in the mountains with dogs, chickens, donkey, gardens, waterfall in the front yard, my son, my partner - dedicated conservationist Rick McGuire, and his mother. Adore good opera. Making gradual reentry into society although still mostly a hermit.

Check out my artwork at www.denitabenyshek.com .

My favorite, inspiring, intelligent, creative, and marvelous RG pals have, for the most part, quit contributing to RG. Not interested in the long cut-and-paste battles between religious factions. Will no longer participate except in rare and infrequent occasions. Will respond to posts on Arts, Spirituality, and Consciousness discussion. Farewell, RG! Thank you for your many gifts.

Hi Denita

It’s great that he’s managing to cope without med though please keep an eye on that just in case there arise periods of where real need of certain pharma’s would be the lesser evil in his continuum.

To say he was ‘overwhelmed’ settling in I imagine was a real understatement. But well done, sometimes as a parent you feel like you truly have to be cruel to be kind in the long run.

The additional art class with older students from what you’ve told me will undoubtedly be a great boost to his developmental assimilation let alone his cog-soc progression.

As a mother you’re doing everything you can and so much more. My heart goes out to you and your son.

All the best and hang in there D. And remember; don’t forget to put aside a little bit of regular precious time just for yourself, which will help you keep strong and refreshed.

Your pal from across the pond

Hi D

Under ‘Source Code Project’ you’ll find my topic ‘Why is the bible God male?’

With the outright question I’d hoped to bring out more personal objective responses, of which there were a few, but alas also the inevitable closed-minded circumvented biblical references as futile explanations. I’m sure you can add some more objective anthropological thoughts on patriarchal societies as well as your usual eloquent personal thoughts on the matter. My initial topic seems to have come to a halt, though interestingly; a few others have since furthered the main theme of the conversation through their own related topics.

- - - - - -

Sorry to hear about your son’s more recent difficult development, which I assume is also complicated by his period through adolescence. I understand it’s not unusual for one’s like him with Asperger's at this time to experience an increased sense of victimization by others along with feelings of social isolation as it combines with his greater capacity for self-awareness, which then often leads to the added development of depression and anxiety in adolescence and into young adulthood.

Repetitive patterns of behaviour, often previously used as compensatory factors, this time may have been triggered to accommodate endless loops of additional depressive thought patterns. These negative patterns need more positive distractional aids to gradually divert him from his more harmful emotively tagged thinking.

Of course I can only speak of Cog-Beh interventions in which I’ve specialised as a psychologist, and where in more difficult cases leads to combined procedures with psychiatrists to also recommend certain types of medication.

I feel for you as a mother, being on such a bumpy ride for this period. Though as adulthood is reached, many older Asperger’s individuals do attempt greater interest in developing friendships, though often still lacking in conventions of social interaction.

“The prognosis [of Asperger’s Disorder] appears significantly better than Autistic Disorder, as follow-up studies suggest that, as adults, many individuals are capable of gainful employment and personal self sufficiency.” (DSM-IV-TR, p.82, (4th ed) 2003, Publ: APA, Washington, DC.)

And yes I agree, a little enjoyable distraction therapy for yourself from time to time sounds good.

My son has what are referred to as ADHD w/ Asperger's syndrome traits. He is 17 now,and although he still has challanges, he seems to be growing out of some of the many of the behavioral/ social difficulties.

I had many of the same traits in my youth, and had my meds pulled completely in 6th grade as an overreaction by a loving mom. By 9th I had found alcohol, and begun self medication. Along the same train of thought, how is your friend doing? Well I hope, but its not an easy road.

The post Roman was referring to was "Why is the Bible God Male" and here is the URL http://www.redefinegod.com/forum/topics/why-is-the-bible-god-male I look forward to your comments too.

Hi D, I think I've hit a raw nerve on RG with my latest topic on which no one seems brave enought to enter into discourse... 'Why Is The Bible God Male?'
Check it out. I'm sure your usual carefully ojective and calculated response would be a much apprececiated response to the biblical ditherers and their undicided onlookers.
Kind thanks,
Roman
