Redefine God - Open Source Religion and Religion 2.0

The Open Source Religion & Spirituality Project and Religion 2.0

Time for change has come.

The current platform running Redefine God is limiting our potential to grow Open Source Religion properly. I'm going to be moving the site to a Wordpress based platform. For those not in the know on Wordpress, it would be Wordpress.org NOT .com...that would just be silly. :)

Anyhow this is going to pretty much allow anything we can think of. We've discussed many avenues in the past for the growth of OSR, now we'll have a chance to activate them.

As always we are doing this together as much as possible. I want you all to think very hard about HOW OSR could be best executed, paying mind to trying to utilize available technology and trying not to spend a great deal of money (I have none, and I'm the only one running this).

By the way, I got a hold of the OpenSourceReligion.org domain name (a totally sweet URL for us that I was lucky to get).

I'm attaching a small list of things I've personally gathered about all this.

I really appreciate the offer Jim. Right now I'm using DreamHost and am quite happy with them. I would be a bit nervous to host on a more private basis with yourself or anyone else just because you never know what might happen with someone's server, but it's really nice to see anyone offering a hand in this.

Drupal has certainly been on my mind. Though like I say in my message to you, I need to know if they have a turn-key solution for social networking. In the meantime I'm heading for BuddyPress.

I'm glad to see people passionate about the outcome of our network, but I'm going to sum up your concerns about any perceived "responsibility" of mine regarding these sites: I am one person. One person with a full time graphic design job; college; daughter; and girlfriend....and this huge OSR project.

If I had access to one or two highly competent and willing people to help design, maintain, moderate, market, monetize, etc, etc, etc; I would take them. But those positions take not just willingness but a pretty substantial set of knowledge and skills that not everyone has.

Now, I know you are familiar with servers and hosting and such, but you need to communicate a lot more clearly with me if you want to help. I posted a discussion some weeks ago specifically asking for help from anyone who knew how to install Wordpress or Wordpress MU or BuddyPress, but I don't remember anyone stepping up and saying "I can.". I remember you suggested a few other platforms but I wasn't that interested because they required code knowledge.

And while The Source Code project is still a ways off, we can at least establish our community on a platform with practically no bounds and in which our posts belong to us. Really these benefits are just the tip of the iceberg.

Overlap Pages: Cool idea Jim. I could see that becoming a widely used resource even by those not associated with OSR.

The easiest way to get a grip of what you were first asking regarding what Religion 2.0 is, is to read the What Is Open Source Religion link on the front page. Perhaps you already have, I'm not sure.

But basically the idea comes down to God = Reality, and Science = Study of Reality, also many scientific laws and ideas have spiritual impact (quantum entanglement), so why not compile an evolving directory of scientific laws, theories, and hypotheses which we feel have spiritual impact?
Also linking them together in such a way so that you can follow trains of thought.
And perhaps integrating a method of scoring or establishing credibility or "logical stability" of the posts.

Example of train of though linking...
Quantum Entanglement (things can become linked over great distance) > Possible starting point for the study of Psi Phenomena
Also related is the fact that our bodie's molecules have existed since the dawn of time, thus providing ample opportunity for everything in the universe to become entangled.

Jim, also please see my Wiki post about this.

Btw, I just found out there is now WPMU MediaWiki integration support!
My main issue here is that something like MediaWiki is so rigid and texty(or maybe that's just Wikipedia's version?). I'd like our compendium to be a bit more media rich (photos, videos, etc).

Comparative religion is a topic that has certainly been brought up here before, but I had concluded the same as you, that comparative religion, and Open Source Religion are really two totally different things. And yes, we do aim to erect a new religion here, but not one that stands alone from others, but that envelops them.

I could have swore opensourcereligion.net was already taken! I should have grabbed it when I could. That's alright though, at least I know who's got it :) Take good care of it and let me know if/when you are no longer going to hold on to it. Since I've already got the .org, and going for the .com, I'd really like to secure the third as well.

I like your idea for your site. But you might want to do a few Googlings on "comparative religion" to see if it isn't already being done on a large scale. It seems there is a decent chance it may be.

Don't worry about me and Wordpress, I've actually gotten it down really well now. It's MediaWiki I'm having trouble with now (despite DreamHost's One-Click Installs).

Jim that is very generous of you. I'd be happy to receive the domain name. Normally I would never, but OSR is something I'm very passionate about and am always doing everything I can for it to succeed.
I'll message you my contact information.

I found another domain name that doesn't say open source in it Sid, that I will use for my site, which was available and I registered, so yes you can have the opensourcereligion.net . I'll email you personally on how to access the domain name record under my account and how we can switch ownership of the domain name.

There is a lot of comparitive religion Sid but apparently not in the simple format I envision.

Db, do you ever say anything true or even coherent?

My husband is serious in his devotion to RG's development. He has invested many hours and a great deal of expertise into creating content and software for to enhance RG. Now is the time for his effort to be recognized and rewarded.

Db, you have a way of stating in so many cryptic messages that you've developed this, done that, invented this, or already "revealed" to me that, but you can't just sit on the sidelines purporting to have developed artificial intelligence, or to have tens of thousands of dollars in financial backing and yet have nothing to show for it. We've talked about this before. Your cryptic messages do not amount to anything and the only person you are fooling is yourself.

I do not believe FOR ONE SECOND that you have someone willing to contribute ten thousand dollars to funding Open Source Religion. In fact I find it insulting that you think I would believe such a thing coming from you.

I'm trying to think of how I can make myself any more clear here....you have never made sense, I do not trust you, and you're a chronic liar who has once again hijacked a completely relevant topic.

Your wife says you created software to enhance RG? Do you think I'm an idiot? For you to actually integrate any software to the Ning platform you have to submit an app. Where is your app? There is not a shred of Redefine God which was "enhanced" by any "software" you "developed".

It's infuriating to have someone on the side of a conversation going "I could have done that" when you never offered in the first place; and also acting like they've developed some sort of software for Redefine God. It's bullshit.

Tell you what. If you are capable of even a quarter of what you claim. Get a cheap hosting account and install Wordpress MU on it. Not Wordpress; Wordpress MU. Do that, and post the link here and we'll see what's up.
Or how about you make a screencast of these applications you've developed?

Haha...alright db. Well if nothing else I'm glad you stick to your guns, even if they are water pistols. I'm heading to the store right now but I'll be back shortly.

Well that's funny. I'm not seeing any links to new Wordpress MU sites, or screencasts of applications built for RG here. Could have sworn somebody said they were on top of this. Maybe the order turned out bigger than they could fill after all. Perhaps this person should stop urging me to force their hand in such matters.

Hosting will be vital if we expect any large amount of traffic, and RG already generates tens of thousands with no marketing behind it. I'm glad you are keen on technological exploration, but we need something that works, can handle large tasks, uses standard platforms, and actually makes sense. Unsurprisingly, I'm thinking Quantum Brainfuck doesn't quite fit the bill.
